What a school library is for

For many people, a school library means dusty books on old shelves.

Dozens of studies show that a well-equipped school library with a qualified member of staff affects pupils’ learning outcomes. It shows in reading comprehension, in standardised test scores and in attitudes to learning in general. According to one study, where such a system was in place, roughly 8% more pupils had improved results in reading.

In the internet age, whether a library is needed at all is a frequent argument. That is exactly where the problem appears: the internet gives us information, but the next step is processing that information properly. Those are two entirely different processes. Besides, for those who live in the highland regions the internet is a luxury on cold winter days, because the villages are not reliably supplied with electricity, and not everyone can afford it.

At such times the school library is the only right answer. It teaches pupils research methods, how to ask the right questions, and critical thinking.

Another aspect is that the library is often the only place where children have broad access to books. That is especially true for pupils whose families cannot afford to buy them. Studies confirm that those who had access to varied literature through a library improved their reading results far faster.

So the library is a place where a pupil grows in many directions. It is fair to say it is one of the most important and useful spaces in a school.
